READINGS AT LAST POST

The Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate
Paul reading the first cameo on 11th November 2014
I was delighted and surprised when The Last Post Committee asked me to write a cameo on a soldier or soldiers for each day of the year from 11th November 2014. It is the most exciting project I have been involved in and it makes me so proud to have been entrusted with such an important task. I knew from the outset that it would be an important part of the wonderful ceremony particularly for those who attend the 8 o’clock commemoration for the first time.
The cameos are shortened versions of the cameos that I write for my series of books ‘In Continuing & Grateful Memory’ and include those from books already published and from those yet to come.
As with the cameos that appear in the books they cover the young to the old, from Private to General, those who were killed at the front to those accidentally killed or murdered. It is, without doubt, a fascinating mix of interesting stories that represent the hundreds of thousands who gave their lives in the First World War. Selecting those to commemorate has taken me a great deal of time and care and as the introduction to the readings says:

“Every day for a year – from 11th November 2014 to 10th November 2015 – the Last Post Ceremony will draw special attention
to particular soldiers, whose lives and deaths can tell us something about the terrible conflict in which they were involved.
Their stories are stories of mud and blood, of unspeakable suffering and limitless human endurance.  However, they are also stories of courage,
devotion to duty and comradeship. We remember with gratitude the sacrifice of these men, and the thousands of others they represent.”

Whilst many of the cameos understandably commemorate those on the Menin Gate itself, others cover the cemeteries that are dotted around the Salient or further afield in Belgium, together a number to commemorate the sacrifices in the other theatres of war.
The silence that is called for and observed, the Buglers play the ‘Call To Attention’ then the reading begins that cuts through the night air.  The resonance under the Menin Gate and particularly the presence of the place gives each reading a more powerful and moving experience for the reader and the listener alike. From the first night when I battled through the crowds to get under the Menin Gate in time to give the first reading, they have gone down very well with the wide range of attendees at each moving ceremony. The families, the schools, the groups and all those commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice or served during the First World War are considered and valued. I am most grateful for the so many kind comments and thanks that have been expressed after listening to a reading. It is reassuring that so many of you have enjoyed it and found it so moving.
In addition to covering a soldier that died ‘on that day’ during the war, many of them 100 years to the day, the readings often cover major events of the war by way of a more meaningful commemoration after remembering the man and his comrades.
I hope that when you attended the 8.00pm the Last Post ceremony and appreciated the readings, do feel free send me your thoughts and views (and thank you to the many who have already done so).
Below is list of the dates and the name of the man or men who were commemorated at the daily ceremony.

Readings from the Menin Gate

I am grateful to friends who kindly recorded both my first reading the Menin Gate on 11th November 2014 — when, as you will clearly hear, I was suffering with a bad cold and my voice nearly gave out beforehand! The story is of two brothers, Privates James and Thomas Freemantle. The second was recorded on 9th August 2015 that tells the story of Private Noah Armstrong.

Tuesday 10th November 2015, Menin Gate
After a year of writing the stories for the Last Post Association, I read the last of the centenary year stories on 10th. A truly wonderful year of writing and in particular reading the stories under the Menin Gate began on Tuesday 11th November 2014. Those attending the daily ceremonies have enjoyed listening to the stories of the soldiers I picked each day and on a number of occasions, purely by co-incidence, members of the family of the soldier commemorated were attending the ceremony. It was, therefore, moving to meet them afterwards when they came up to me and introduced themselves — very many of them moved to tears with the emotion of the moment. I am, of course, indebted to Benoit Mottrie and the Directors of The Last Post Committee for asking me to undertake the project in the first place. In addition to them I have so much enjoyed working with Brian, Gilbert, Manu and others who, over the year, have performed the task of ceremonial assistants at the daily ceremony. They have a great sense of humour and every evening we enjoyed a laugh together, with a joke being played on me, usually with the microphone positioned in some way to make it impossible for me to use (without the aid of a box to stand on). The buglers, who make the whole evening particularly special and are the centrepiece of the ceremony, made me welcome and were always appreciative of my readings. Throughout the year I met so many interesting people as well as bumping into a lot of old friends and acquaintances from the UK.
Much to my surprise, or more accurately described shock, at the end of the ceremony on Tuesday Benoit beckoned me forward. I assumed he wanted the microphone that I use for the readings. During the longer than normal ceremony I had turned if off and put it away so rushed to get it turned on and handed it over with some relief. As I was doing he so he told me it was ‘me’ that he wanted and not the microphone as the buglers wanted to thank me publicly for my work over the previous year. In front of the assembled gathering I was taken by Benoit to shake hands with each of the buglers in person, all of whom were so kind with their remarks. I was further taken aback when I was presented with a gift by Benoit on behalf of the Committee — a beautiful lithograph of the ceremony at the Menin Gate and is duly inscribed: “To Paul Foster, with the grateful thanks of the Last Post Association for his contribution to the centenary readings 11/11/14 to 10/11/15.” For once I was lost for words, I know that I did manage to thank him and everyone else for their unexpected but much appreciated kindness.

With the Buglers at the end of the ceremony on 10th November 2015 and being presented with my beautiful gift by Benoit Mottrie, Chairman of the Last Post Association.
