Product Details

Two cemeteries, one being the most visited on the Salient and the other so often driven passed en route to the other — Essex Farm and Duhallow ADS.

There are 152 wonderful, amazing and interesting stories of men buried in both cemeteries that will surprise you. They will make you wish to follow the individual stories and trace their history on the ground.

Over 300 pages packed full of personal information on the men who died, and follow them from when they arrived in France until their death. Many only served in the Salient but others served in other sectors such as northern France and/or the Somme.

Private Thomas Barratt, VC, and 15-year-old Rifleman Joe Strudwick are buried in Essex Farm, as everyone will know. However, there is a wide selection of others with a well-known past from the nephew of Viscount Haldane, the son of Edward Barclay from Barclays Bank, a cousin of J R R Tolkien and a contributor to Punch. Six 17 year olds are buried in the cemeteries, so often overlooked as people only visit Joe Strudwick.

During my research I discovered an old boy from my School who had been missed from its Roll of Honour, he has now been added and is commemorated by them during their visits to the Salient, on its War Memorial and remembered at the annual Remembrance Day Service.

As with all of my books it is richly illustrated with photographs of those commemorated, contemporary illustrations to match their stories, drawings and maps — many in colour.

It is a fascinating book of a three-part companion set. The next volume will cover Bard Cottage and the third covering Talana Farm and La Brique Nos 1 and 2. It is all to do with commemorating those who gave their lives in service for King and Country. All the men had families and a life before service, they will be remembered.
