Douglas Gillespie served in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Douglas Gillespie was an intelligent young man who was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford. He was well travelled and but for the First World War he was expected to become an accomplished lawyer. He was commissioned and left for France in February 1915. He served on the Ypres Salient and in northern France being killed on Sunday 26th September 1915 during the Battle of Loos. His long and detailed letters provide an intimate view about life in the trenches. The original book was published by his family in 1916. In Part II there are cameos on twenty-eight personalities mentioned in his letters. 228 pages
