The 308 page book gives you a fascinating insight to the Mons Battlefield of August 1914. There are cameos on 157 soldiers who are buried in the cemeteries listed below that cover the Battle of Mons 1914 and in some of the cemeteries those who died in 1918. All those soldiers who are considered to be ‘the first’ and ‘the last’ to be killed on the Western Front, those to win the Victoria Cross et al are included.

Apart from the two tours of the sector the book has interesting contemporary commentaries including, amongst others, Field Marshal Sir John French, Major General Edward, Count Gleichen, Major Herbert Stewart, Major General Sir Frederick Maurice and Hauptmann Walter Bloem. HIH Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s murder and Sir Edward’s Grey speech to the House of Commons are fully covered — plus much more.

There are a large selection of colour maps to help you trace where the fighting took place, a superb selection of photographs and illustrations (many of them in colour) that bring the Mons Battlefield to life.

The cemeteries covered in the book are: Angre Communal Cemetery Asquillies Communal Cemetery Audregnies Communal Cemetery, Ciply Communal Cemetery, Cuesmes Communal Cemetery, Elouges Communal Cemetery, Flénu Communal Cemetery, Frameries Communal Cemetery, Givry Communal Cemetery, Grand-Reng Communal Cemetery, Hautrage Military Cemetery, Jemappes Communal Cemetery, Mons (Bergen) Communal Cemetery, Montignies-sur-Roc Churchyard, Nouvelles Communal Cemetery, St Symphorien Military Cemetery Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension, Warquignies Communal Cemetery, Wiheries Communal Cemetery.
